Alanis Morissette @ Festival Hall, Brisbane (Sun 5 May 1996)
So, at one of the share houses I was living in 1995, one of my flatmates was working for a radio station in Brisbane. Every now and then he’d bring home CDs of artists that we’d never heard of before. One day he came home with Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. None of us had heard it, and this was months before it hit commercial radio with the thump that it did.
The album got played to death in that house, and it was a damned fine album. I know a lot of people don’t like Alanis Morissette, but seriously, you’ve got to admit this is an extremely well written, and well produced album. Even if you don’t like the music or the voice.
Anyway- after the album went nuts on the radio, my girlfriend at the time and I went along to this gig. It was brilliant. Alanis had more energy than I’d ever seen at a live show. It was also the first time I ever saw Taylor Hawkins play the drums (who now plays for the Foo Fighters).
That show was 15 years ago, so I don’t remember specifics of the set. All I remember was that it was a brilliant performance. I’ve not really gotten in much of the stuff she’s released since then (and haven’t heard either of the 2 albums before), but would be tempted to see her live again if given the opportunity.
To prove that the world is indeed small, as many people seem to claim, my brother-in-law engineered her 7th studio album, Flavors of Entanglement.
