The Shins @ Corner Hotel, Melbourne (Wed 10 Dec 2003)
So, I’m not too sure on the date of this one… I know it was just after Nick Cave played the Music Bowl with Calexico and Neko Case, becasue I wanted to be in Melbourne for that but couldn’t be there, so ended up seeing [intlink id=”109″ type=”post”]Calexico at The Zoo[/intlink] instead. So it was definitely in that week, but unsure of the date- so if anyone knows, please let me know in the comments!
Anyway- onto the show. I was in Melbourne for business, and really wanted to go to Meredith, but by the time I’d confirmed what dates I’d be down, it’d sold out. One of the bands I’d been keen to see at Meredith was The Shins. I went with my old business partner Julian, and it was the first time either of us had seen The Shins play. I’d bought Chutes Too Narrow on a recommendation from a friend, and absoluted loved it.
It was also the first time I’d been to The Corner. What a great room! I remember being utterly blown away by The Smallgoods, and subsequently bought their album, which I still listen too from time to time.
I remember being not so impressed with The Shins. They weren’t bad by any means, but they just didn’t seem to be as awesome as I was hoping. I remember thinking the drummer looked a lot like Mick Molloy, and ironically enough, ran into him (Mick, not the drummer) at the bar.
Needless to say, I obviously got over my disappointment, as I’ve since seen them a bunch of times since, and every other show I’ve seen has been fabulous. Maybe they just had a bad night?
