Death Cab For Cutie @ Palace Theatre, Melbourne (Tue 21 Feb 2012)
That was great. Everything I wanted to hear (except Tiny Vessels) and a whole lot more. I was especially chuffed to hear Marching Bands Of Manhattan which I was hoping for, but didn’t think there was much chance of from looking at previous setlists on setlist.fm.
We only managed to see the last few songs of Dappled Cities, but they sounded great, and it was a shame we didn’t see more.
Death Cab’s sound wasn’t brilliant, but by no means was it crap. It just felt a bit flat. It definitely wasn’t the room as when I saw Elbow there last year (and Jesus Jones and The Wonder Stuff as well), the sound for those shows was exceptional.
There wasn’t a hell of a lot of banter between songs, but I’ll freely admit I’d prefer a long set like this, as opposed to a bunch of pre-rehearsed chit chat. It still seems Ben Gibbard feels he has to do the big drum thing in We Looked Like Giants (video below). I remember when I first saw him do it years ago in Brisbane, I thought it was pretty pointless and didn’t really add to the show (it’s not like he’s pulling out any mad drum moves). I’m quite surprised to see it still in the set five years later.
All in all I’m glad I went, as I had been tossing up whether to attend.
Wifey came along to this show as well which was fabulous. The New Year is a favourite of ours, and we had a fantastic (drunken) dance to that whe we saw Death Cab at Splendour 2006. Twas lovely to dance to it again at this show.
Some pics and video below.
